I specialize in working with adults with unresolved trauma and/or those who struggle with misophonia (see age perimeters below)*.
I strive to be a culturally humble therapist.  I am an LGBTQIA+ ally.

I offer Misophonia Consultation for those seeking misophonia support who live outside of Minnesota.

Somatic Experiencing

Anytime the body feels threatened or overwhelmed (whether the threat is real or perceived) and is not able to complete the "defensive response cycle", trauma can get stored in the body. We may consciously know the threat is over or we may not even have conscious memory of the experience (such as with birth trauma) but the nervous system will continue to respond as if the threat might come back (think hypervigilance or shutdown) ultimately restricting our capacity to manage day-to-day stress.
Somatic Experiencing is a powerful way to finish "incomplete motor plans" and reintegrate healthy and helpful associations.

Misophonia Support

While there is no cure or official treatment protocol for misophonia (yet!), there are many ways to make living with it more manageable.  Addressing sources of nervous system stress is a crucial part of reducing the impact of misophonia, along with identifying contextual pieces that shape the degree to which your brain processes the sound as a threat (then allowing you to be more strategic and less at the whim of your nervous system).
Somatic Experiencing ties in nicely with misophonia work since it provides tools for greater nervous system agency.
*Because of the high demand for misophonia support yet limited number of specialized providers, I see misophonia clients/families on a short-term basis (up to 6 sessions).  At the end of our time together, I will provide you with personalized short and long-term goals you can continue to work on, ideally with the support of a therapist .  The goals will be things many therapists are equipped to support. Essentially I will be helping you/your family identify what is "fueling" the misophonia and understand what's helpful and what's not in the short and long-term as you navigate misophonia.  I do direct work with those who are age 17 and older. For those with misophonia under the age of 17, I primarily focus on providing the parental figure(s) with support and ways to help their child and family manage misophonia. I will still meet with your child at times (if they are open to it), but I find helping parents clearly understand this confusing condition and the path towards managing it well to be the most effective use of our time together. It's best for your child to develop a relationship with an ongoing therapist (you can start this prior to, during or after our work together) and I'm happy to connect with that person to make sure they understand misophonia and my suggestions to your family for managing it.
